November Meeting 2002

The food was plentiful and delicious and for this special time we were just a group of friends gathered together to enjoy a wonderful meal and one another's company.

Door prize winners were:
Bill Burch - Aloette Hand and Body Lotion
Bobbie Quilling - Yardley Lavender Liquid Soap
Edwin Moore (Betty's son) - Coupons from Wendy's
                             (donated by    Janine Walterhouse)
Pat Warr - Chrysanthemum plant

We want to express our appreciation to our family members who joined us.  You will never know how much your loving support means to us.

As a group we have accomplished a lot over the last four years and we look forward to another year of providing support, education and raising awareness.

May Meeting 2002

Susan Lewis, respiratory therapist, was the speaker for this meeting.  Susan has many years of experience in her field.

She discussed what a pulmonary function test (PFT) is, what it measures and what it means to the patients.  She warned that the accuracy of the test can be influenced by several factors: the effort put forth by the person taking the test, the equipment used, and if the operator is efficient.

After  ward, Susan answered questions from the audience.

A number of our group members attended these seminars which were all excellent presentations.  They resulted in quite a few new members from the Kenner, Jefferson, Metairie and New Orleans areas.

We appreciate all the help Mary Christopher of NorthShore Regional Medical Center in Slidell was in facilitating these seminars.  Everyone of them had waiting lists.

September Meeting 2002

Dr. Mittie Doyle, rheumatologist and Associate Professor of Medicine at Tulane, discussed scleroderma and all of its manifestations in depth.

52 people attended this meeting and everyone was impressed with her knowledge and her passion for her work with this disease.  She has applied for a grant to further her research work specifically the "cluster" in Morgan City LA.  The state has been unable to pursue their investigation due to financial constraints.

Karen Swensen of Channel 4 TV, who first broke the story of the Morgan City cluster, came to meet the group.  She has followed closely the state's efforts to deal with the problem and is very encouraged that Dr. Doyle will able to make a difference in identifying and clarifying the problem.

With people like Dr. Doyle and Karen Swensen on our side, we can at last begin to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

As our fifth year together comes to a close we can look back on another year of fulfilling our group aims of support, education and awareness.

We have gained new friends and said goodbye to others.
And we continue to move forward and look toward the day when a cure is found.
We know that this will be so for

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
